Question: Marsha (29, Tampa, FL) Asks: Do men prefer blondes?  I’m a brunette and my friend is a dirty blonde; I think I’m more physically attractive than her, but she still gets more looks than I do.

Answer: After receiving this email, I realized that I’ve had this conversation many other times but pushed it off as trivial.   Obviously, it is weighing on some of your minds.  To answer the question, I began comparing women I speak to with those I’ve actually asked out on dates.  I came to the conclusion that: I don’t prefer blondes when it comes to getting digits, but I do look at them first.

I usually make visual contact with blonde women first, but I end up closing the deal with brunettes or black haired women more often than not.  It would be easy to blame magazines and movies for making us only want blonde women; but I think it has more to do with the idea that people simply relate that hair color to ideas of being young, fun and energetic.  When it comes down to actually discovering a woman though, I’m more intrigued by the exoticness and adventure.  I get a sense of this from dark-haired females.

So, if you’re not a blonde, don’t change your hair color just yet.  You may have to work a little harder to get in his front door; but after you are, take him on an exotic adventure!

Ryan apparently knew everyone at the table as everyone as shaking hands with him, but the mood became so thick you could cut it with a blade.  Saul was just kind of staring at his beer. Dan acted real friendly and gave up his chair to Ryan.  If we’d been inside, the room would’ve felt suffocating to me.  Everyone just got tight.  At first, I was fine because I was oblivious to the happenings.  I definitely needed to hear this story.

Story

“You want to go with me to the bar to get a drink,” I said trying to seem casual like I really needed one.
“Sure,” she smiled and got up.  I pulled my chair back so she could walk in front of me.  As I turned to walk away, Sarah shot me a face with a half-smile.

I walked to the bar behind Anna…holy crap, she has a nice ass.  It’s always fun dancing with her because she only dances after drinking and she’ll let me brush across it without thought!!

As we arrived at the bar, “I’ll have a Guinness and—.  What would you like?”

“Dirty martini with Ketel!!” she shouted across the bar standing on her toes.  She’s a package of cute and hot all-in-one!

I turned my back to the bar and looked at her, “So what the hell happened over there?”

She ignored my question, grabbed my shoulders and turned me to the right, “Here, that’s better,” she grinned.

“Do you feel better when you face south?” I said sarcastically acting as if I had compass in my head.

She laughed.  “No, remember Greg?” She said sternly.

“Greg, Greg, Greg,” I repeated as if I didn’t know who he was.  “Oh yeah! The guy you—“ she threw her hand over my mouth.  “The guy you let take you and—“ she kept trying to cover my mouth as I muttered more words through.  We probably looked very obnoxious to everyone.

“Here drink your foamy beer and hush,” she said.

“So, what happened over there?” I asked again taking a sip of my fresh beer.

“Where do I begin?  You see Sarah and Ryan have been have been dating for about three years.”

“Oh, crap! Really?” I paused for a second…Anna nodded and I took a swig.  “I never would have guessed that.  Ryan doesn’t have a clue about Dan.”

“Well, they’re all in the same group, so he doesn’t really think about it I don’t think.  Sarah and Ryan are so comfortable with one another; but she definitely acts more flirty with Dan.”

“How long has this been going on?”

“Four months or so,” Anna began to describe a few instances to me.

“Don’t ever leave those two alone,” I joked.

“They’ve been alone before, but nothing has happened.”  I gave her an unbelieving look.  “No, they haven’t.  She would tell me.”

I’m always surprised how well women claim to know their best friends.  Things they’re ashamed of don’t always come out easily. For now, I have to take Anna’s word for it.  I bet something did happen though, and I will report if I find out anything.

What are your thoughts though?  Does this constitute cheating?

My friend Nirali got caught up in a tizzy with her boyfriend over the weekend.  Apparently, it was one of those fights that start out about one thing and then lead to about nine other things.

The typical cause of this is the girl saying too much and the guy saying too little.  Girl gets inflamed with guy because he’s not talking which leads her to say things she really doesn’t mean.  All girls do it…some to more of an extent than others.  I dated one girl in college that I swear she just got off on it in some weird way.  We always had make-up sex…now that I think about it that’s all the sex we had that last month or two.

Anyway, the gist of the fight is that she got into an argument at work with a female coworker; and when she came home to bitch about it, he offered advice.  This was a big mistake on his part.  I wasn’t there, but I’m assuming that she got defensive about it as thought she had to plead her case to him…the more he responded, the more infuriated she became.

I learned long ago that when women are upset with anything…just listen.  Don’t offer advice.  I realized that women herd, so they’re used to people listening and consoling.  If I’m walking down the street with a girl and she breaks a nail…the correct response is, “I’m sorry.  It’ll be ok.”

ST: Where do you go to college and what year are you?
Sheila: I go to the University of Alabama and am a sophomore.

ST: Why do you love college football at Bama so much?
Sheila: College football is incredible. It’s the one thing that really brings the whole university together; and I like it for that reason, not to mention I just really enjoy watching football.  In the south people take so much pride in their team, which makes great competition and is a way to unite people by sharing something people love.

ST: What game are you most looking forward to this season?
Sheila: I’m personally looking forward to kicking LSU’s butt! This year is going to be a great year for Alabama’s football team and I’m very excited to see the team succeed.
ST: Your friend Lily over at LSU said the same just not as strong.  I’m going to have to interview the two of you again before that game.

ST: Do you plan to attend any away games this year?
Sheila: I do plan to attend a few away games this year, the LSU game for sure. The best part of the road trip to away games is the excitement. Just knowing that you get to support your team in another city and show others what you’re about is pretty exciting, and a car full of friends is always fun!

ST: Who’s do you think the hottest player is for your team and why?
Sheila: The hottest player (that I’ve seen) is John Parker Wilson, not to mention he is our quarterback.  Nonetheless, he still is quite the looker. I’m sure there is someone I would find more attractive on the football team but they just don’t show the other players as much I guess.

ST: What’s essential for ladies on game day?
Sheila: In Alabama crimson, grey, or houndstooth sundress is pretty much essential. Alabama is mostly Greek, which means the girls must look nice at games. Now not all the girls are Greek so non-Greeks pretty much just rough it in T-shirts and jerseys.

ST: Are you Greek?
Sheila: I myself am not Greek and am kind of 50/50 my outfits for games. Sometimes you’ll catch me in a nice Alabama themed dress and sometimes I like my T-shirts. There are three things that are essential to me on gameday:
1. Sunglasses (if it’s a day game),
2. Alabama Koozie
3. A nice cold beer in that Koozie.

ST: When it comes to the passion of football in the south, it seems that most people don’t fully grasp the seriousness of it.  What would you tell an incoming freshman female about her first football season?
Sheila: If a female freshman coming in from my hometown (which is not in Alabama), I would tell her it’s incredible. Most girls don’t enjoy watching football so you don’t really understand until you’ve been in Bryant-Denny Stadium and witnessed it first hand. Its so amazing how everyone comes together to support the football team, sometimes it even gives me the chills because it’s such a great feeling to know that you’re part of it. It’s actually really hard to even describe the feeling. It’s definitely one of those things you just have to experience. I would also say know your Alabama football history because girls down here know there stuff.  Football down here is almost a religion and I’m sure many people would agree.

The Crimson Tide is coming off a huge win over the Georgia Bulldogs and are now ranked #2 in the country ahead of LSU.  The LSU/Alabama match-up from Baton Rouge (11/2/08) is shaping up to be a good one.  I will touch base with Sheila again before that huge rivalry game.

SO I was out in Atlanta this past weekend at MoonDogs and came across two young pretty things from the south.  From across the bar, they were the typical young, hot blond types that were garnering all the attention from the boys; so I did what I was supposed to do and approached them.

Approaching confidentially, I said, “Where are you two from?”
“What do you mean?” they responded almost in unison.
“Well, I can just kind of tell that you two aren’t from here.  Most girls who are regulars are here in jeans and you two are here in stunning sun dresses.”
They both giggled, “We’re both from New Orleans.”
Unexpectedly excited I let out an over anxious, “Really?”  Pausing for a second to regain my composure, “So am I!”

Location is always the easiest and non-cheesy pickup a guy can make, and since we were all from the same hometown, I immediately trumped every guy in the room.  It didn’t take long for me to find out that both of these girls go to school in the SEC, so we immediately began to discuss college football.  As girls go in the south, they were very knowledgeable and exuded the passion that comes along with being a Southerner.  I told them about the blog and commented that they couldn’t wait to check it out.

A few days later I had an epiphany that I should hire some female correspondents to cover something they love aside from the typical dating stuff that Shower Tokens revolves around.  So I contacted them on Facebook to help out and they were immediately excited and even offered up some of their friends.  I’m not sure how far this will spread, but we will start with a few and see what shakes loose.  For now meet…Lily and Sheila.
